- A:Before replacing the thermostat, check the coolant level, drive belt tension, and temperature gauge. To replace the thermostat, disconnect the battery cable and drain the cooling system. Follow the radiator hose to the engine and remove the necessary components. Squeeze the tabs on the hose clamp and detach the hose(s).
